Designing movement

Artist and designer Ben Hopson realized that designers tend to be exclusively interested in form when they create a new product and that innovations in the way products move (for example, the opening of a case) are sadly not their priorities. Aesthetic principles seem to apply only to static objects and kinetics are always left in engineers' hands.

Hopson believes that a more beautiful or surprising movement can add value to new products and improve functions of existing objects.

So he started to explore and experiment on the aesthetics of movement using playing cards and foam models. See his recordings here and read his conclusions.
